Even more frankly, we would all be even better off if we did away with
the wires altogether. Unstayed masts have nothing to break,
maintain or replace (5 years for plastic rigging, wow!), have lower
centre of gravity, and boat weight, reef automatically in gusts and
dumping the main sheet means instant and total depowering on any point
of sail or wind strength.
And they are cheaper, particularly if the boat is designed for the
unstayed rig rather than having it retrofitted. Cheaper still if you
build your own mast.,
