lightening stikes... now how often does that occur?
we spent 48hrs in a full lightening stom on the edge of hurricane Bonnie in 2003, pitch black all the time - i was even able to photograh the ligtening on a 'snap' camera... saw lots of stikes hitting the water and could smell the ozone, but no sign of it hitting the 20m carbon rig...maybe the soft rigging acts as an insulator??
i have seen the results of lightening hitting an ally mast and it was trashed... so no difference b/n carbon and ally

Couldn't a lightning strike anneal the aluminum mast from generated heat
well below melting points?
Normal mast material would have been heat treated to a T6 condition for max
strength, I would guess.
This would weaken it invisibly.

A little behind here...
Other folks covered the Spectra rigging issues.
No one mentioned my biggest concern with the Carbon mast: lightening
strikes. Once the mast has been hit, you may not be able to tell the
extent of the damage. The heat can burn the epoxy matrix holding
the carbon together in ways and in places that are very hard to find.
With an Al. mast, the electronics may be toast, some fittings may
have to be replaced, but the mast itself will be just as strong as
before the strike. Or, if the strike did damage the mast, the damage
will be quite evident. There will be no mystery.
