Not really, as it is the best rig available in terms of an easy to sail, low
maintenance, low cost, reliable, safe rig. It's performance is as good or
better than a conventional cruising rig, probably a little less good than a
racing rig with a competent crew constantly pulling strings.
I think the reasons there are not more of them are:
1) They are perceived as new and different technology, and most multi
sailors have got as much of that as they can handle in their hull
configuration.
2) Carbon has historically been expensive. This is no longer the case. We
currently have 7 unstayed rigs over 15m long to build. They are cheaper
(and lighter) than stayed alloy equivalents. They are also virtually
maintenance free (check the halyard and reefing sheaves every few years,
coat of paint every 10 years) with much less wear on sails and ropes.
3) Many cruising sailors seem obsessed with having what the hot race boats
have, regardless of whether this is because it makes them faster (rarely) or
because it is mandated by the handicap rules.
Of course, I could be wrong. I would welcome any input from cruisers, even
racer cruisers, as to why they prefer whatever rig they have.
regards,
Rob
