On Rosebud 2 (near sister to Charleston) we use a 1:1 Vectran core  
Poly cover 5/16 line with the cover double stitched to the core.  A  
bowline to the headboard, no shackle.  It has never broken and we do  
nearly all the tweaking with the downhaul which is 6:1 with the  
option to take the tail to a 10:1 winch. We typically snug it up  
after the first bit of sailing and then only trim if the wind  
strength changes.   Light, simple, and we cut off a foot or two of  
line once or twice a season.  We also take the other end to a horn  
cleat and unload the stopper as that has been a source of problems in  
the past.
