When I first read the circumstances described about this disappearance, the first thing I thought of: Was the swimming ladder tied down for offshore sailing? If so, was there a swimming platform or other method of EASILY climbing into the boat? EASILY because if there is shock and panic.....
I say this also because I fell from my trimaran a year ago at the mooring. I found much to my shock that it was very difficult to regain the boat. There is a small rear platform but the rudder is in the center of it and I could not regain the boat that way. I was able to do so only with strenuous effort using a water stay as a foot support. Needless to say, I now have lines on both sides of the boat to make access from the water much easier. And while I was regaining the boat it was moving, a good gust and it was gone. And if I did not have hold of it, goodbye.
I recently sailed on a monohull offshore and I remember that the swimming platform was tied down and could not be deployed from the water. Whether the swimming platform could be easily regained from the water I do not know but I doubt it.
So, check if you can regain your boat easily from the water.
