I have kept my s/s rod on the diamonds - only changed shrouds and forestay. i have tried spectra (6 years ago) on diamonds and there was too much strecths/creep then...
BUT
newer types of spectra, vectran, PBO etc has less creep than s/s when used in the proper construction (ie paralllel) and many IMOCA 60's are now using it on diamonds. you add bulk (ie increased diamameter) over rod and it is then a trade off b/n bulk (aerodynamic drag) and weight saved
 
i do intend to try vectran or PBO on diamonds in the future
