 Vis a vis square rigs to weather. 
One night in Key West, we went to the quay for the very theatrical arrival of
the Disney's Pirates of the Caribbean square rigger's nocturnal arrival. Those
Disney guys know lighting and it became apparent that in terms of airflow the
thing was nearly a huge solid elongated cone. No wonder they wore around
instead of coming about. Imagine the lift required to shove that to windward.
Absent the huge amounts of rigging and things just might get interesting to
windward. Nobody's done it 'til now. 

No keel? Really?

I didn't exactly understand your "No Keel" comment? Maltese Falcon does not
have a dagger or centerboard yet, but she certainly has a keel, a heavily
ballasted one at that.
