Do you know more about these "emergency release devices"?  It's always
seemed like a good idea to me (in theory) to be able to have some
automatic or, at least, quick release system when you get hit hard with
a gust and you are not ready instantaneously to release sheets or
traveler.  I've always thought of a powered switch controlled be heel
angle, but that might not work in really large seas off shore.
