 In think I would build a 'center pod' akin to the swiss cats, that could be
floated up under the boat and raised and clamped to the main beam and aft
beam. This pod would contain a single power plant that would be directly
connected to prop shaft, and the pod would have a fairing up front to direct
the ocean spray away from the engine.  

If you arrange for the prop to contact the water nearer the boats longitudial
center there will be less problems with prop coming out of water upon
pitching, and probably no need for a sled. Engine might be located aft on the
'pod' and drive shaft forward...maybe even a forward facing prop (pulling
prop)like the volvo units

Sort of the KISS principle. Single engine, direct drive, possible surfacing
prop. Leave the steering to the boat's rudders. Engine pod could be
transported to race finish on normal boat trailer, and floated to boat from
the beach or via lift if neccessary. Standard old auto or used truck engine,
maybe diesel....disposable if necessary
