[MHml] AB power

I dunno, Bill,

Efficiency isn't the issue for you. Power and weight are. Arneson's
personal boats are, well, fairly incredible. He gets on the order of
2000 hp from gas turbine mills which weigh on the order of 300 lbs
(plus transmissions, which are a *bit* heavier). This makes me
think...

Suppose you considered honest-to-gosh inboard engines, but gas
turbines, not gasoline or diesel. Maybe 200-300 hp apiece. Including
transmissions (you need something like 5:1 for gas turbines), surface
drives and all, I suspect you can manage it for something much less
than the weight of a pair of 250 hp outboards. You'll burn some
kerosene (gas turbines like JP7--aviation kerosene--but will run
happily on #2 diesel), but the weight and "inconvenience" of the
engines would be minimal--and boy, the sound of a pair of gas turbines
spooling up needs to be heard to be believed...

I know Howard Arneson (slightly). This niche--motoring hot multihulls
home after races--would be a new one for his technology; he might just
be tickled to play with it. I bet it wouldn't cost any more than that
30' RIB + twin 250 Yamahas we were talking about--and let's face it,
Howard doesn't actually need the money... Would you like an
introduction?

Dave
