  Yes, cost is a factor.  I also was thinking you could use just about any
engine you could find.  For example in Texas we have quite a few Kubota and
Indian diesel tractors floating around.  Or you could use one off of a
bobcat or forklift.  One thing we don't have over here is very many small
diesel cars, our environmental protection agency has effectively banned them
due to emission controls.  The smart car isn't here yet either, the first
are to be imported late this year.  I've checked out the Sonic leg before, I
want to say it was relatively expensive.

You might also check the "Z" and saildrives from silette:

Look at the pages for "sonic propulsion systems" as well as "hydrodrive 
propulsion systems" some of the legs contain gearboxes.

But why choose a different gearbox when someone else (those german guys with

the smart engine) have already mated a standard, parts globally available 
box ?
