I suspect it's actually a MOV, metal oxide varistor. These are used in various sizes in most surge protection equipment.

They're pretty cheap and easily to wire in yourself.

I suspect that he is using a system that leads the strike to "ground", I work in the process automation business, and we often use these "Lightning protectors" when instrumentation is mounted in bore holes, as the signal cable often needs to run several hundred meters on the ground, to the main control station. We mount these units at each end, one at the sensor end and one at the control/powersupply end. They are called either surge arresters or overvoltage arresters. There is a short explanation here: http://www.dehn.de/www_DE/frameset_E.htmlCheersAlanJeff, you're not the only one. I too would be interested in a description ofSodebo's onboard lightning protection system.JoeS.s/v KatieKatJeff Van Peski <sociaboat at hailmail.net> wrote:> Subject: [MHml] Subject: Sodebo and IDEC Streak Around the World>> Am I the only one who was struck by this sentence, and wants to know> more details on this 'circuit breaker' ?
