[MHml] Winch vs Tackle

On the original 28' Rosebud we would bear off in puffs under genaker
and under jib as well if we weren't right on the wind even though the
lee bow was very prone to dipping. The one time we flipped her was
heading up in gusts, a bit cracked off, on a crowded race course
when we couldn't head down. Now at 33' with 3 1/2' of extra bow out
there, life is much less exciting as it is very rare we depress the
bows even a bit. I agree with Ross that when using the big genaker
up wind in 'Swiss Lakes " mode or our upwind only smaller genaker,
you have to depower up but that is usually in very light air.

Depowering the jib with sheet for big adjustments or trav for small
ones also is key to taking pressure off the lee bow up wind if you
don't have extra buoyancy there.

I suspect Charleston would benefit from a similar lengthening but it
is a very big job and I can understand Ross wanting to try other
things first.

Ted

P.S. Our helm also does not change as we lift a hull.
