[MHml] flying helm (was winch vs tackle)

Interesting, thanks Bill and Claas. I was thinking that when viewed in
plan the hull drag would be divided between both hulls with the CLA of
the rig on the centre line, all nearly balanced in our case as we
usually experience slight lee helm. Lifting the windward hull would
shift the drag to the leeward of the CLA giving a lee helm. This is
similar to how a mono dinghy can be steered by heeling without a rudder.
The Azuli weighs 5 ton in sailing trim and has fixed LAR keels and fixed
rudders, could the difference in behavior be down to the fact that your
cats weigh less and certainly cause much less drag. If I'm talking
rubbish please feel free to say so.
Cheers Peter.

The only time we lifted a hull, thanks to a gust off a local hill,
dumping the track line had little effect a big ease of the main sheet
brought the hull down immediately. The most interesting thing for me was
with the hull in the air our cat developed huge lee helm, this I assume
is due to the drag of the leeward hull acting against the CLA, but how
do you guys who regularly fly your cats handle this?
Cheers Peter.
