When STB capsized the traveller was already all the way down, one rudder was out of the water and the other was stalled out. Then the hydraulics would not release and over she went.
On XL2 blowing the traveller just changes the angle of attack slightly, doesn't do much to prevent capsize. Dropping a foot of mainsheet allows the head of the main to twist off and depower as well as radically lowering the centre of effort. Just a foot of mainsheet and the windward hull drops back to the water with a bang! A couple of inches is all that is needed to bring her down gently. Then it is just a little winding to get it back on again. Much more trouble to get the traveller back on after release. I use traveller for sailing downwind or as an interim depower immediately prior to reefing. Upwind it stays on centre or in light weather a foot to windward.
