Hi all.
If you want to go for a technically descriptive name then the strikers are
actually spreaders, as that is what they do. They dont strike anything
intentionally. They spread the stays to get better support angles. The
dolphin striker may have picked up its name to differentiate it from the
lateral spreaders also sometimes found on a long bowsprit.
On this basis the strut (general term for a [usually straight] rigid
compression member generally not supporting a vertical downward load) under
the beam (generally horizontal member supporting a shear or bending load)
which keeps the stay (fixed tension member, commonly flexible) in the
correct position, would be a beam spreader or a beam stay spreader, but
dolphin striker seems to be here to stay, as is is more commonly used.
Cheers,
Peter
