         Both. The lines from the bow exert considerable downward 
pressure when the pole is swung out close to that bow, the line to 
the bridle wire takes most of the strain when the pole is centered.

         It is an obvious concern. My front crossbeam is a composite 
structure too, lozenge section to minimise drag when/if immersed and 
possibly provide some lift. Its fore and aft dimension is in the 
order of 16 inches so reasonably stiff. Also there is a walkway back 
from the centre of the crossbeam to the main structure, dividing the 
front trampoline into two halves, so this too provides some support 
against the back thrust of the spi pole.
