Peter,
I believe the system you are thinking of is also used on the Gemini cat ...?
I don't have a spi but I use the schreacher in winds up to 12 kts apparent
..... but I feel (and will probably get) a symmetrical spi for downwind
CRUISING.
With the schreacher the deepest I can sail is 130 deg app, 140 = limit, at
150 it wants to gybe. As I hate to see a sail flog, it means we have to sail
"hot" even when I'm cruising.
Pete Roberts on K35 "Trinity" is faster than Gem downwind when he has spi up.
On the Telstar I had a symmetrical spi with sock & it worked well.
I think that when it's blowing, I would feel less anxious with the fully
battened main down (can't shake the wind out) and spi only up.
Trouble is 2 spis would be needed - heavy & light airs. It goes on & on ....
Perhaps discuss at MOCRA dinner during Southampton boatshow?
