[MHml] Rigging an assym spi

Interesting solution Roy. What is the approximate angle of your pole to the
horizontal and do the lines to the bows stop the pole from rising or the
adjustable line to the crosswire? I am a little nervous of the compressive
loads to the front beam on our cat as we have the Lerouge moulded beam.
Food for thought though.
Cheers Peter.
My set up is a cross between Gary's and what you are suggesting.
However it has an additional item, a 10 foot long pole hinged at the
centre of the front crossbeam. The pole has both an adjustable line
down to the crosswise line - 1/4" 7 by 21 wire in my case, and a line
from the pole end through a block on each bow and back to that
cockpit to a turning block , winch and cleat. It also is supported a
bit above the horizontal with a length of light line from the pole
end to the top of the seagull striker strut. It flies both the symm
chute or the drifter/reacher, so should handle an assym with
aplomb. When swinging the pole from one gybe to the next it creates
a 10 foot gap between the pole end and the jib luff and the spi has
no problem in passing through, neither has the drifter/reacher when
tacking. It permits a wide range of tack locations and can fix it
quite securely. Letting it come all the way back to rest at the end
of the front crossbeam makes for a convenient and safe place to
attach the sail tack to the pole end IMHO.
You can get all of that without a pole, I guess, but certain
advantages, as I see them, would be missing along with the pole.
