[MHml] Yamaha 9.9 Problems

I know you're asking Paul, but you did post to the list.

2 engines widely spaced on Sonrisa gave me incredible maneuverability, the best of any boat I've seen. Spin in my length, parallel
park in little more than my length. Maneuver to any dock in almost any wind with confidence. Just like driving a tank game, didn't
even use the rudders, just held them straight.

1 center engine on Afterburner may give me about the worst. Since the outboard is amidships (fore and aft), even if I could turn
it, it wouldn't help. All steerage comes from the rudders which need some water flow, so no maneuvering at a dead stop, and limited
maneuvering slow. The bows blow off in any wind (at low speeds) so I've learned to "back" around the harbor. The boat follows her
rudders well, especially into the wind. I've learned to make due, and how to compensate for these short comings. I plan ahead and
use the wind. Our first year in the harbor we were dangerous docking. But that was a long time ago, and it's been a long time
since we've had problems. I guess our seamanship has improved.

Consider redundancy as well. The one time we lost an engine on Sonrisa, we drove home on the other one, docked, and worked on it
there. The one time the outboard died on Afterburner (thrust bearing failure) we had to jury rig it at sea, which was a lot less
fun).

Both boats have made the best design decisions, one is a racer, and one is a cruiser.

Paul,

How would you rate your maneuverability with one engine? Do you have the engine hooked into your helm? Have you ever operated with
2? I am asking because I haven't yet decided to go with one engine or two on my 30' cat.

Thanks,

Lincoln Baxter
