[MHml] shroud cover

I used the uncovered Dux Dynex 75. It's easier to splice single braid. I thought the heatshrink tubing would be thinner, smoother,
and more opaque than a woven cover. Precourt built it for me (nice job). I was amazed at the cost of heatshrink tubing. Partially
because I specified pvc tubing which was more expensive than polyolefin, but thicker and supposedly better at UV resistance and
chafe.

Even though dux dynex 75 is pre-stretched, because it is a woven line as opposed to unifiber, there is a mechanical stretch that
needs to be taken up under load. It needs to take a "set". My dux dynex 75 bobstay needed one after-use adjustment, and it has
held position for 18 months now.
My lower side stays have been in use for 4 months, and needed a 2nd adjustment. When I had the mast down, I noticed that line
stretch had lead to 2" of dux not covered by heatshrink tubing at the top, a good measure of how much it has stretched. A little
rigging tape has covered this gap (I hate UV).
I've only motored 1.5 hours with my new upper stays, but it was choppy and we got tossed around a bit. We ran lines from the upper
deadeyes aft to a winch, so that I could pull the deadeyes aft and tension the bare mast. Otherwise it swung alarmingly from
side-to-side (rotating mast, normally loose rigged relying on sail pressure to firm things up). This short transit stretched the
new uppers about 4 inches. Hopefully this is most of the mechanical stretch.

I am having canvas lashing covers made out of sunbrella, to keep the sun off my lashings.

Bill,

Do you use the DUX 75 with the cover(grey/brown) and
then put a cover on that, or use the uncovered(orange)
and then cover that?

I assume you use the uncovered, do you think that is
more durable? Or was that just the type that was
available to you?

Take care,
Richard Mastro

To others,

Don't confuse Dynex DUX with Dynex DUX 75 they are
very differant products.
