Dan,
We were discussing "plastic rigging" and UV damage.  My new stays are dux dynex 75.  I covered them for UV protection.  I am not
concerned with water damage.

The classic method to do this is scrape bee's wax around the junction. 
The first hot day the stuff melts into the joint and keeps the salt and 
air out.

Now there are may grades of heat shrink. If you use the stuff with the 
glue sealers in it then that should work into the joint some as well. 
The seal however is Dependant on how much grease or whatever the riggers 
and product manufacturer used to lube/seal things was left on the rod. 
Without that seal well you will just be holding the sea water in place 
to do it's work.
