Out in SoCal they've always been gull strikers

Is the term "seagull striker" a European thing? I've always thought of them
as "pelican strikers"? BTW there was a sweet article on this very topic
about the all carbon forebeam arrangement (dolphin and pelican errr...
seagull strikers) on the Gunboat 48.
On some smaller boats (Tornadoes, VX40 and I think the Firebirds) there is
no strut the strikers simply connect a short distance up the forestay which
messes up your ability to roller furl and splits the forestay into two (i.e.
the tension's not the same throughout) but ti is dead sexy.
