I believe soot (carbon) implies a lack of sufficient oxygen for the 
amount of fuel.  Possibly this is simply due to the choke during 
startup, but since your carb was serviced, I'd check the air filter and 
exhaust path to make sure both are clear.  Also make sure the choke is 
opening post-startup.
