I am seeing US prices over $300 for the XX - know of any good sources
(vs. around $100 for a Lewmar D2)

I blew a cover with a Spinlock on Sonrisa, so I replaced the clutches
with Lewmars (no-chafe dominos inside, or so the ad said), and later
blew a cover again. At this time I was told that all clutches have
trouble with highly loaded halyards with high-tech cores, because the
cover and core stretch differently. Sceachers are especially a problem.
On Afterburner we leave high load halyards on winches or on horn cleats,
using the clutches to move them around, but not for long term holding.

I have not blown a cover on a Spinlock XX clutch, but I have overloaded
a line (2400 pounds?) and pulled thru one. This is a special high load
clutch that is almost a jammer. IF I had to trust a clutch to not blow
a cover, this would be the one.

I have a new (beginning of this summer) 1/2" main halyard made of
Spectra with Dacron braid cover that I use on a 1 year old Spinlock XTS
Clutch on a 42' Atlantic cat. We spend a moderate amount of time
cruising this summer, no racing and I tend to reef early.

On our way from New England to the Mid Atlantic, this weekend, I heard a
loud bang, followed by the Main dropping about 10 feet (wife was not
happy).
It turned out that the outer braid had parted at the clutch and the
halyard went down until it bunched up enough to stop the drop.

I had to take the remaining outer braid off to fully drop the main, then
rig a spare halyard that was 7/16 with a vectran core/Dacron braid outer
to hoist the main. This line is 2 years old but a spare because the same
clutch can't stop it at all, so I now have to run it back to an unused
spinnaker winch.

So my question is about the Spinlock XTS - I used Lemar D2s on my former
Trimaran with the exact same rig for 5 years and never replaced the
halyard and it stopped Vectran lines all the time. Is there a problem
with Spinlocks in general, or this series? It is rated for 5/16 to 9/16.

Anyone have any suggestions (or a spare 120' of outer braid)?
