Sorry to have missed you Reidar, what an event! We also visited
the docks on Friday and despite the crowds managed to get close to each of
the boats to photograph the details, so may excellent ideas that our winter
job list has grown yet again. Managed a quick word with a very busy Ross,
such a sad end to a fine race boat, I hope that there is a silver lining to
your difficulties Ross. We were hoping to watch the start as well but
unfortunately whilst visiting Rothneuf Harbour our mobile home was broken
into which changed our priorities somewhat. I thought that only happened
here in the UK, never mind all fixed now.
Cheers Peter.

Thanks to those of you on this list giving advice regarding visiting
Saint-Malo and the start of Route du Rhum
It became indeed a very nice autumn holiday; nice weather, nice people, nice
district, nice small towns, and all those great boats - wow!
Arrived Thursday, visited Saint-Malo on Friday, drove down to Vannes and la
Trinite on Saturday, watching the start from Cape Frehel on Sunday
They say hundred of thousands visited St-Malo during the week prior to the
start, might be true
It was all very well organized for visitors. Big parking lots and shuttle
buses both to St-Malo and Cape Frehel, all for free! (would never happen
here in Norway). And no traffic jam as someone had experienced at earlier
events
I was travelling with one of my crew members and we will have a slide-show
from this trip at our clubs Christmas dinner
This was ment as a "once in a lifetime experience", not so sure about that
after this successful trip
To those of you considering to visit the next race in four years I have just
two advices:
1. Just do it
2. Book your hotel early
Any downsides? Depends on how you look at it. I liked Bretagne so much I
invited my wife on a weeks holiday there next June after the Færder Race.
I'll miss one week's sailing, but it's give and take and hopefully it will
give me some goodwill for the rest of the season :-)
Reidar
