It starts to need a pretty large rake to get a great deal of lift vector. Then again Hobie 16s and windsurfers do it.

What exactly is the point of mast rake anyway?
-------------------------------
Four reasons for raking the mast:
1) Balance (no need to explain that).
2) Allows to increase the foresail span while keeping mainsail span, at the expense of less usefull sail surface. Lift increases with span, so more span means more power.
3) Increase the efficiency of the mainsail roach (see Bethwaithe's drawing in his book)
4) Rotates upwards both sails' lift vecto. The upward component of lift raises the boat, allowing to plane earlier.
