Larry, You asked for it!
1. Rake for a boat such as yours is just about tuning the boat's balance.
Best is to have an easily altered rake that can be set to the conditions at the
time. Note racing monos have had hydraulic positioners on the mast step to
allow forward rake downwind, aft upwind. Windsurfers likewise but even more.
Go for whatever works. Forward rake looks dorky.
2. McGregor hulls are none too strong or stiff, particularly at this age,
so avoiding loads that translate into the fiberglass is a good idea. I like
the bridle for the shrouds even though it is a cumbersome setup. The
hull-deck joint seems to be a weak point in the production and usually leaks. If
yours is not already glassed over perhaps you should consider it for strength and
to stop leaks.
3. The McGregor 36, even is stock form, was definitely a boat one could fly
a hull with so I would suggest paying particular attention to features that
allow fast and easy depowering. Avoid cleasted off sheets, etc. Running
backstays are another capsize issue; hard to release when main jibes in a
thunderstorm.
4. If you go with transom hung rudders where will you mount a motor?
