[MHml] mast rake

Am I right in thinking that the Mac 36 has a masthead jib,
pinhead main, and fixed backstays to the transom? If so,
converting to a raked rotating mast with a roachy full
batten main my take some careful thought, some changes to
the standing rigging, and experimentation to get the balance
right. One benefit might be that you could get the same sail
area and more efficiency in a shorter mast. The cut of the
foot on the full batten main you have located may point you
in a particular direction as well.
I have a raked (~10%) 7/8 rigged fixed mast with a modern
full roach main on my 34' tri. The fixed mast has advantages
for a cruising boat and is going to be simpler and cheaper
to rig. The rake seems to help sail twist and how the sail
"hangs". But I think rake and rotation may not be as
beneficial or important as making a change to a (perhaps
shorter) roachier rig.
The advice from another poster about all the other things
that might be done before going to a rotating mast was well
taken.

Subject: [MHml] mast rake
I'm replacing the rig on my Macgregor 36, as I have the
opportunity to
change from my fixed mast to a rotating one, and found a
used but
reasonably good fully battened main to replace the piece of
junk I have now.
The old mast was vertical with no mast rake, but there is a
suggestion
to include some (4 to 8 degrees) of rake with the new mast,
which is
what it had on the boat where it was previously used.
What exactly is the point of mast rake anyway? If it is
just to balance
the boat, rake is going to make my boat more unbalanced. Is
there some
aerodynamic reason for rake? I'm inclined (no pun intended)
to just
make the stick vertical unless there is a compelling reason
not to.
