Ross,

Thank you very much for your synopsis of sleep-deprivation and cat napping
(multihull content) - you're absolutely right, I certainly wouldn't be able
to keep up 10-20 minute nighttime cat naps without a lengthier daytime
sleep. The technical aspects of performance under sleep-deprivation is a
whole field unto itself and I have the utmost admiration for you racers -
which is a personal stress environment radically greater than us laid-back
cruisers and simply unimaginable by non-sailors.

Thank you also for providing the information about the specific hardware
you're using - that Sea Me transponder looks like a very useful device and
one I would consider installing when I next do some mast work. I agree with
you, despite all the advances in signal processing, radar is far from
perfect - incredible and rather frightening how many vessels are not 'seen';
for myself, my worries are about smaller fibreglass/wood boats without good
radar reflectors and not carrying radar themselves.

Finally, a note for anyone considering installing a central alarm system -
be sure to have some visual or audio indicator immediately showing WHICH
device is triggering the alarm. :-)
