So are we saying this thing was not terribly efficient Chris ?

My guess is this would dampen Mr Siemens' interest as increased efficiency is 
one of the big selling points of diesel electric.

Personally I can see that a vectored thrust unit (or units) that was 
retractable and removable without slipping would be especially attractive for 
multihulls. 

I have never been a fan of a saildrive's reliance on a large rubber membrane 
and the leg and prop are always there causing drag.
