Given that one should be able to launch on both tacks, would it make sense
to put a velcro patch (or strap) on each side of the leading edge of the
kite?  The halyard would then be stuck (or restrained) on the appropriate
side.  Another approach might be to tie the halyard to the lee clew with
yarn that would be strong enough to get the kite raised, but could be broken
when the kite filled.
