The first day of racing of the Royal Southampton Yacht Club’s Frostbite
series on Sunday saw a southerly breeze of between 3 and 11 knots.
Due to poor visibility and no wind on the first scheduled day of racing on
Sunday 6th, two races were run on Sunday 13th to get back on schedule.
The Race Management Team set the Committee Boat close to the Netley shore.
Although the cloud condition was overcast, the threatened rain did not
appear and the temperature was pleasantly mild.
The multihull class were first away at 1010 with a beat to Bird Pile
followed by a series of windward-leeward legs with a short spacer leg to
port at the upwind part of the course.  The five multihulls enjoyed a great
tussle in a snakes-and-ladders-style battle with the patchy breeze. David
McLeman’s Dragonfly 920 Zoum! was first around the windward mark and
eventually taking line honours and victory on corrected time.  Mike Browne’s
Farrier F24 Legless had a long battle with Pete Jenkins F28R Shakatak, the
latter prevailing by 10 seconds on the water but Legless pulled through on
corrected time with third Simon Forbes’ Dragonfly 800 Scooby III.
In race two the shifty conditions continued to see a great interplay between
the fleet but most at ease was Sydney 2.4m Paralympic sailor Mike Browne who
took line honours with his F24 Legless, the lowest–rated boat, with Zoum!
second and Blue Tail (Tim Wilson’s Dragonfly 800) third. Three of the five
boat fleet were given time penalities for invading the Committee Boat’s
exclusion zone at the start.
The RSYC Frostbite Series continues on January 27 and then every other
