When Howard Hughes set the world record for flying around the world, 
back in the 1950's, he had every non-essential nook and cranny of the 
plane filled with ping pong balls (thinking about the typical double 
skin of aircraft--this is a lot of volume). The plane did not go down 
(broke the record, of course), so the concept was not tested...

I suppose this could be viable, in a multi... I've a feeling the darn 
things'd always be popping up at every odd time, though. Always a 
conversation starter, OTOH.  ;-)
